| Description: |
Perennials to 60 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Leaves flat, with margins ciliate, papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract herbaceous. Inflorescence of pedunculate, elongated, proximally lax clusters with basal flowers often remote. Bracteoles membranous to straw-membranous, ovate, to 2.5 mm long. Tepals ±equal, glabrous, ±lanceolate, acuminate, c. 2.5–4.0 mm long, pale straw-brown to (later) pale brown; margins broad, membranous. Stamens 6; anthers usually slightly to three times longer than 0.4–0.6 mm long filaments; style 0.4–0.7 mm long; stigmas 1.3–2.8 mm long. Capsule ±shorter than perianth. Seeds with appendage 0.4–0.5 mm long, fibrillate. |

| Geography: |
A variable species distributed in Pacific North America from Alaska to California. The whole group (including also L. subsessilis) is imperfectly known. In addition to the two varieties recognized below, a number of forms, seemingly intermediate between L. comosa and
L. multiflora s. lat. occur in the same area and reach Arizona and Colorado. Some of the forms are diploid [cf. H.Nordenskiöld, Hereditas 37: 336–337 (1951), as L. campestris var. columbiana]. The whole group requires a detailed study in W North America. |
