| Description: |
Plants c. 25–60 cm tall; rhizome vertical to oblique. Basal leaves usually 8–13 cm long,
3.5–6.0 mm wide; cauline leaves 3–4, 6–10 cm long, 2.0–4.5 mm wide. Lower bract usually 1.5–4.5 cm long, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence densely to loosely congested, 1.5–3 cm long, c. 1.0–1.5 cm wide, lobulate; clusters rarely 1–2 long pedunculate, 2–3–many elongated and 8–15-flowered, pale; basal cluster often remote or inserted on a long peduncle in the axil of upper cauline leaf. Tepals 2.5–3.7 mm long, pale straw-brown to (later) ±brown; margins broad, scarious. Anthers 0.6–1.0 mm long, equalling or longer than 0.5–0.6 mm long filaments; style 0.4–0.5 mm long; stigmas c. 1.3–1.8 mm long. Rare tetraploid plants with almost wholly pedunculate inflorescence exist as well [California, Tuolumne Co., Hetch Hetchy, c. 1250 m, H.Nordenskiöld 50-16 (UPS)], and it is difficult to draw a line between the two ploidy levels without a detailed study of seeds. |
