Description: Plants 10–20 (–30) cm tall. Basal leaves ±flat, ±flaccid, 6–15 cm long, 4–7 (–10) mm wide; cauline leaves 2–4, (4–) 5–10 (–13) cm long; margins ciliate to densely ciliate, densely papillose-serrulate. Lower bract to c. 5 mm wide. Inflorescence congested, rarely with 1–4 clusters shortly pedunculate. Tepals 2.4–3.4 mm long. Anthers 0.7–0.9 mm long; filaments 0.6–0.7 mm long; style 0.4–0.7 mm long; stigmas 1.0–2.5 mm long. Capsule papillose above. Seeds 1.1–1.2 mm long, c. 0.6–0.7 mm wide; appendage 0.1–0.2 mm long. 2n=12 [AL], fide H.Nordenskiöld, Bot. Not. 122: 72–73 (1969).

Notes: The holotype of L. australasica is in very good agreement with that of L. oldfieldii. The former bears another label 'N. Holl.', which is an obvious mistake. A neotype selected by H.Nordenskiöld, Bot. Not. 122: 79 (1969) is superfluous and has no nomenclatural importance.
