Description: Plants (6–) 13–23 (–40) cm tall; rhizome short. Basal leaves usually 8–10 cm long, (0.7–) 2–3 (–4) mm wide; cauline leaves usually 2, 2–3 mm wide, ±sparsely ciliate. Bracts usually (1–) 2 (–3), herbaceous, usually to 6 cm long, equalling to overtopping inflorescence. Inflorescence composed of a single congested head usually accompanied by 1–7 pedunculate clusters; clusters 6–12-flowered, 5–8 mm in diam.; peduncles straight to flexuose, smooth, 1.5–3.0 cm long. Tepals 2.3–2.9 mm long. Capsule ±obovoid, subobtuse to subacute, deep castaneous-brown, shining; capsule segments 1.8–2.1 × 1.2–1.3 mm. 2n=12 [AL], fide J. B. Hair, New Zealand J. Bot. 5: 18 (1967).

Notes: This variety is very variable in the number of pedunculate clusters. Specimens from the North Island usually lack pedunculate lateral clusters, while those from the south of the South Island usually have several pedunculate clusters accompaning the central head. The leaf margins of specimens from the North Island are almost glabrous.
