Description: Perennials, densely caespitose; stolons absent. Leaves with smooth margins; tips obtuse. Inflorescence usually composed of a single congested dark head, often accompanied by 1–7 pedunculate clusters. Bracteoles whitish scarious, sometimes suffused castaneous-brown, 1.5–2.0 mm long, sparsely ciliate. Tepals ±narrowly lanceolate, 2.3–3.2 mm long, dark castaneous-brown to blackish; margins narrow, membranous to paler castaneous. Stamens 6; anthers 0.3–0.6 mm long; filaments 0.6–1.1 mm long (longer than anthers); style 0.5–0.6 mm long; stigmas 1.0–1.5 mm long. Capsule shorter than perianth. Seeds ellipsoid, deep castaneous-brown, apiculate, 0.9–1.0 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide; appendage whitish, c. 0.1 (–0.15) mm long, sparsely fibrillate.

Geography: Known from South Island, Stewart Island, Antipodean group (including Campbell and Auckland Is.) and Macquarie Is., Australia. Two varieties are recognized.
