| Description: |
Perennials, (10–) 15–28 (–45) cm tall; rhizome long, branched, creeping-ascending, c. 1.0–1.5 mm in diam.; stolons ±short, ascending. Basal leaves c. 6–10 (–20) cm long, (2–) 3–4 mm wide. Cauline leaves 2–3, c. 4–10 cm long; margins ±swollen, ciliate, smooth or with sparse, often reddish papillae; apex obtuse, swollen. Lower bract herbaceous, ±erect to erecto-patent,
2.0–3.5 (–7.0) cm long, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence variable in shape, usually of 1–2 (–4) elongated heads c. 5–20 × 5–10 mm; heads each composed of 3–7 (–10) spike-like, subcylindrical, shortly pedunculate to subsessile clusters; sometimes inflorescence not dense and elongated, with 2–3 proximal clusters on smooth peduncles 1.5–3.5 (–7.0) cm long. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, to 1.0–1.5 mm long, subentire to sparsely ciliate. Tepals subequal or inner or outer slightly longer, broadly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, (1.8–) 2.0–2.5 (–2.7) mm long, carinate; outer tepals ±acute, rarely subobtuse; inner tepals subobtuse, mucronate, deep brown to pale castaneous-brown, with margins distally broader, scarious, subabruptly narrowing in apex. Stamens 6; anthers 0.4–0.8 mm long; filaments 0.6–0.8 mm long; style (0.2–) 0.3–0.5 mm long; stigmas 0.6–1.2 mm long. Capsule broadly ovoid to subglobose, ±obtuse, longer than perianth, light to dark brown; capsule segments c. 2.1–2.3 × c. 1.5 mm. Seeds ±ovoid, 1.1–1.3 mm long, c. 0.8 mm wide; appendage 0.2–0.3 mm long, fibrillate. |
