| Description: |
Perennial c. (13–) 20–25 (–30) cm long, caespitose. Stem with numerous ±flat or canaliculate basal leaves 2–3 mm wide, with straw-brown to brownish sheath bases. Cauline leaves usually 2, ±canaliculate, 4–6 cm × 1.5–2.0 mm; margins distinctly densely papillose-serrulate, sparsely ciliate; sheath densely hairy above; leaf tip obtuse and slightly swollen in basal and cauline leaves; bracts ±mucronate-acute to acute. Inflorescence erect, usually composed of 5–8 clusters, congested in a lobulate head 1.5–3.0 × 0.8–1.0 cm; basal
1 (–2) clusters ±always remote, 0.3–1.0 cm from the main head. Lower bracts herbaceous
2.0–4.0 cm × c. 1 mm, conspicuously longer than inflorescence, erect, erecto-patent or reflexed, hairy. Bracteoles usually 1.0–1.8 mm long, fimbriate near the apex, shorter than tepals. Tepals ±lanceolate, 2.0–2.3 mm long, acute, entire, dark castaneous brown, pale bordered near apex. Stamens 6; anthers 0.7–0.8 mm long, slightly shorter than 0.8–0.9 mm long filaments; style 0.2–0.3 mm long; stigmas 1.1–1.3 mm long. Capsule obovoid, subacuminate with a short beak, ±exceeding tepals; capsule segments 2.0–2.2 × 1.1–1.2 mm, brownish. Seeds ±ellipsoidal, dark brown, 1.0–1.1 × c. 0.7 mm, with whitish caruncle c. 0.1 mm long. |

| Notes: |
Similar to L. abyssinica and L. caricina; in particular, the three species share the inflorescence morphology (erect decompound inflorescence with a remote, long-pedunculate basal spike-like cluster). L. taiwaniana differs from L. caricina in having dense clusters (not loose with remote flowers), much shorter seed appendage and narrower seeds. From
L. abyssinica it can be distinguished by shorter tepals and styles, and capsule exceeding perianth. |
