Notes: The present concept of subsp. atrotepala is equivalent to L. rostrata var. rostrata sensu J.E.Ebinger, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 10(5): 301 (1964). The recently examined type of the name L. rostrata Buchenau proved to be referable to the species currently known as L. plumosa E.Mey. [Z.Kaplan, Preslia 73: 64 (2001)]. The plants of L. jimboi subsp. atrotepala with rather southern range are rarer than the type subspecies and are confined in their distribution to the central part of Honshu with rare disjunct occurrences in northern Honshu., Most herbarium specimens identified as L. rostrata actually refer to L. jimboi subsp. jimboi. However, specimens of L. plumosa subsp. plumosa, L. jimboi subsp. atrotepala, and, outside of Japan, even L. rufescens have been in part referred to by that name., In Japanese works [e.g., Y.Satake, J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo, Sect. 3, Bot., 4: 193 (1933); F.G.Meyer & E.H.Walker, Ohwi’s Fl. Jap.: 273 (1984)], two species have been often distinguished, mainly on the basis of anther/filament ratio, namely L. plumosa (incl. L. japonica) and “L. rostrata” (here treated as L. jimboi). While the value “anther as long as or longer than filament” has been generally given for L. plumosa, “anther shorter than filament” has been claimed for “L. rostrata”. However, this simple distinction does not work, as both L. plumosa and L. jimboi show considerable overlap in variation ranges of this character (L. plumosa 0.6–2.3, L. jimboi 0.4–1.8). This is the main reason why “L. rostrata” has been erroneously reported from almost the entire distribution range of L. plumosa, including areas as far distant as Yunnan, China, and Darjeeling, India.
