Description: Plants 15–30 (–45) cm tall; stem 0.7–1.5 mm in diam. Basal leaves very numerous, usually (3–) 6–20 (–30) cm long, 1.0–3.0 (–4.7) mm wide, involute to canaliculate; cauline leaves usually 2. Lower bracts 1–2, usually to 3–5 cm long, shorter to longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence composed of 1–5 subsessile and 2–8 pedunculate (altogether usually 5–11) clusters; clusters broadly ovoid, (3–) 5–8 (–12)-flowered, 5–8 mm in diam.; peduncles ±straight, usually to 2–3 cm long; secondary branches usually absent. Tepals ±lanceolate, acuminate, usually (1.9–) 2.0–3.0 (–3.4) mm tall; middle part ±castaneous-brown or dark brown; margins paler brownish to cream-membranous, not distinct. Anthers (0.7–) 1.0–1.4 (–2.0) mm tall; filaments 0.2–0.5 (–0.6) mm long [anther:filament ratio (1.5–) 2.4–4.2 (–7.0)]; style 0.3–1.0 (–1.2) mm long; stigmas 1.4–2.5 (–3.0) mm long. Capsule obovoid, subobtuse, pale castaneous above or entirely straw-brownish, shorter than perianth; capsule segments (1.7–) 2.0–2.4 × 1.1–1.6 mm. Seeds ±ellipsoid, 1.0–1.2 mm long, 0.6–0.8 (–0.9) mm wide; appendage minute, 0.1–0.2 mm long, fibrillate. 2n=12 [AL], fide H.Nordenskiöld, New Zealand J. Bot. 4: 187 (1966).
