Description: Perennials, 7–41 cm tall, glabrous; stoloniferous to caespitose, occasionally with stolons to 6 cm long. Stem with numerous basal and 2–3 cauline flat leaves; basal leaves 1.5–19 cm Χ 1.5–4 mm (extremely rarely up to 6 mm); cauline leaves 1.5–6 (–11) cm Χ 1–2.5 mm, sparsely pubescent to subglabrous at margins, without a mucronate projection on callose tip. Inflorescence terminal, mostly simple, sometimes with 1–3 secondary pedicels present; secondary/primary pedicels ratio 0–0.5; primary pedicels 5–10, spreading to slightly nodding; flowers borne singly on primary or sometimes also on secondary pedicels. Basal bract to 1.8 cm long, shorter than inflorescence. Bracteoles 1.3–1.5 mm long. Tepals equal, 2.0–3.5 mm long, lanceolate, acute, entire, light to dark brown with hyaline margins. Stamens 6; anthers 0.6–1.2 mm long, longer than filaments; anther/filament ratio 1.0–4.0; style 0.3–0.7 mm long; stigmas 1.3–1.6 mm long, ±persistent. Capsule ovoid, acute to subtruncate or mucronate, equalling to exceeding tepals, stramineous to light brown. Seeds ellipsoid, 1.1–1.5 Χ 0.9–1.1 mm long, with apical appendages 0.4–1.5 mm long; seed/appendage ratio 0.8–3.0.

Geography: Asia, from E Siberia, northernmost China, Korea and Russian Far East; Alaska and W Yukon in North America. Records from Japan are erroneous. Two varieties are distinguished, one of which occupies a limited range near the centre of the Asian range of the species. Intermediates between the varieties are occasionally found.
