Description: Perennial, 6–45 cm tall, glabrous, caespitose or shortly stoloniferous, with stolons usually to 3 cm long or exceptionally up to 12 cm long. Stem with numerous basal and 2–3 cauline flat leaves; basal leaves 2.5–26 cm ื 1.5–10 (–13) mm; cauline leaves 4.5–9 cm ื 2–6 mm, sparsely pubescent to subglabrous at margins, without a mucronate projection on callose tip. Inflorescence terminal, simple to compound, rarely to decompound; secondary/primary pedicels ratio 0–2.5; primary pedicels 5–12, erect, spreading to nodding or reflexed; flowers borne singly on primary or secondary or rarely even on tertiary pedicels. Basal bract to 4 cm long, shorter than or seldom equalling inflorescence. Bracteoles 1.5–2.3 mm long. Tepals equal to subequal, 2.6–4.5 mm long, lanceolate, acuminate to mucronate, entire to crenulate at apex, pale brown to dark brown or purple with hyaline margins. Stamens 6; anthers (0.4–) 0.6–1.5 mm long, shorter or equalling to longer than filaments; anther/filament ratio 0.6–2.3; style 0.4–1.4 mm long; stigmas 0.9–3.8 mm long, ฑpersistent. Capsule ovoid, subtruncate to acute, shorter or equalling to exceeding tepals, light brown to stramineous; capsule/tepal ratio 0.8–1.3. Seeds ellipsoid or rarely subglobose, 1.0–1.6 ื 0.9–1.1 mm, with apical appendages 0.2–1.7 mm long; seed/appendage ratio 0.9–6.0.
Description Table:
1 Inflorescence conspicuously compound to decompound; basal leaves
4–10 mm wide; lower pedicels often reflexed; plants often up to 41 cm tall, robust [Mountainous regions of S-C China and adjacent territories]

113c. subsp. reflexa
1: Inflorescence simple to compound; basal leaves mostly 1.5–5 mm wide (only occasionally in certain southern Japanese populations up to 13 mm wide); lower pedicels generally ascending to spreading; plants mostly
6–25 cm tall, rather slender
2 Basal leaves 1.5–5 mm wide; secondary/primary pedicels ratio mostly 0–1.0; anthers mostly 0.6–1.2 mm long; anther/filament ratio 0.6–1.2; seed/appendage ratio mostly 0.9–2.2 [India through the Himalayas to China & Japan]

113a. subsp. plumosa
2: Basal leaves conspicuosly broad, 4–13 mm wide; secondary/primary pedicels ratio 0.3–1.8; anthers 0.8–1.5 mm long; anther/filament ratio usually 1.0–2.3; seed/appendage ratio 1.4–3.0(–6.0). [S & C Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, ?Korea]

113b. subsp. dilatata
Geography: From NE India through China to Japan. Extremely variable species. Local populations often differ in the ranges of their quantitative characters from the average values. The variation has a reticulate pattern, and intermediates between the extremes are common. It is therefore possible to distinguish only three main geographic entities as separate subspecies.
