Description: Perennials, 10–25 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves often suffused purplish, c. 3.5–5.0 cm long, 2–3 mm wide; cauline leaves usually 2, 3.5–7 cm long, to c. 2.5 mm wide; margins ±sparsely ciliate, papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract usually 1.5–2.0 cm long, erecto-patent, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence contracted into a ±conical lobulate head, to 1.8 cm long, of 2–5 ±sessile clusters or rarely one on smooth peduncle to 1.5 cm long; clusters c. 8–13-flowered. Bracteoles ovate, to 1.0 (–1.5) mm long, membranous, often brownish at base, sparsely ciliate-fimbriate. Tepals ±equal, glabrous, ±oblong-lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 1.9–2.5 mm long; outer tepals acuminate, brown to castaneous-brown, rarely darker; margins ±membranous, usually broad. Stamens 6; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long; filaments c. 0.5 mm long; style 0.1–0.2 mm long; stigmas 0.7–1.2 mm long. Capsule narrowly ovoid, subacute, shorter than perianth, ±castaneous-brown; capsule segments 1.9–2.1 × c. 1.1–1.2 mm. Seeds ellipsoid-ovoid, 1.0–1.1 mm long, 0.6–0.7 mm wide; appendage 0.10–0.15 mm long, fibrillate. 2n=24 [24AL], fide T. W. Böcher, Meddel. Geography: Confined to W Greenland, E Alaska and NE Canada. Wet places on lake shores and along streams, usually on ±neutral soils. Map 144., 70. Notes: In many respects very similar to L. sudetica. L. groenlandica is distinguished by its equal tepals, usually broader seeds, usually much paler flower colour and almost always wholly contracted inflorescence, and its chromosome number.
