Description: Perennials, (20–) 30–45 cm tall, caespitose or one-stemmed, robust; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves 10–20 cm long, to 5–6 mm wide; cauline leaves conspicuously large, (2–) 3 (–4), usually 9–15 cm long, (4.5–) 5.0–7.5 (–8.0) mm wide; margins ±densely ciliate, densely papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract leaf-like, c. 3.5–8.0 cm long, to 5–6 mm wide, usually equalling or exceeding inflorescence. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, brownish at base, c. 2.0 mm long, sparsely ciliate-fimbriate. Inflorescence of (1–) 2–3 (–6) subsessile and (2–) 3–5 (–7) pedunculate clusters; clusters ovoid-subcylindrical, usually 11–18-flowered, c. 8–10 × c. 7 mm long; peduncles straight, 2–6 cm long, c. 0.6–0.8 mm in diam., smooth; secondary branches frequent, confined to the most distal part of peduncle (pedunculate clusters thus often composed of 2–4 subclusters). Tepals, ±equal, glabrous, lanceolate, c. 3.2–4.3 mm long, long-acuminate, dark castaneous-brown to blackish brown with sharply delimited distinct scarious margins. Stamens 6; anthers (0.8–) 1.0–1.3 mm long, equalling or longer than 0.5–0.7 mm long filaments; style 0.5–0.7 mm long; stigmas 1.8–2.2 mm long. Capsule oblong-ovoid, shorter than perianth, ±acute, brown; capsule segments c. 2.5 × 1.4 mm; mucro c. 0.1 mm long. Seeds 1.2–1.3 mm long, (0.6–)0.7–0.8 (–0.9) mm wide; appendage 0.2–0.3 (–0.45) mm long, fibrillate.

Notes: Plants from the W part of the range sometimes are intermediate between L. kobayasii and L. multiflora s. lat. in their general habit, and may be of hybrid origin.
