Description: Perennials, 10–30 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome ascending; stolons not seen. Basal leaves long, often equalling or overtopping stem, c. 9–32 cm long, (2–) 3–6 mm wide; cauline leaves 3–5, to c. 25 cm long, often exceeding inflorescence; margins swollen, subglabrous to sparsely ciliate, smooth; apex obtuse. Lower 1–3 bracts leaf-like, 2–20 cm long, usually much overtopping inflorescence. Inflorescence subcongested, large lobulate head to 3 cm in diam., or composed of 1–3 subsessile and 1–8 pedunculate clusters; clusters large, ovoid, 8- to many-flowered, 7–15 mm long, often of several indistinct subclusters; peduncles straight, smooth, to c. 2 cm long. Bracteoles narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, to c. 3 mm long, scarious, subentire or sparsely ciliate-fimbriate. Tepals ±equal, or some outer tepals longer by c. 0.5–1.0 mm, long acuminate, subaristate, (3.6–) 4.5–6.0 (–6.2) mm long, usually distally castaneous (to a variable length and degree), proximally pale brownish, sometimes wholly straw-brown; darker tepals with distinct narrow scarious margins. Stamens 6; anthers 0.5–0.7 mm long; filaments (0.5–) 0.9–1.1 mm long; style 0.6–0.8 (–1.1) mm long; stigmas 2.0–3.5 mm long. Capsule oblong-ovoid, ±acute to acuminate, straw-brown, smooth, much shorter than perianth; capsule segments 1.9–2.2 Χ c. 1.3 mm. Seeds ovoid-ellipsoid, dark brown, 0.9–1.0 mm long, 0.6 (–0.7) mm wide; appendage c. 0.15 mm long.
Geography: A remarkable endemic in Lord Howe Island. Rocky slopes, amongst scrub. Map 142., 50. LORD HOWE – NORFOLK IS.: Lord Howe Is., summit of Mt Lingbird, Jun 1872, C.Moore 39 (para: K); Lord Howe Is., Mt Gower, c. 840 m, P.S.Green 1611 (K).
Notes: One of the most distinctive species in the sect. Luzula, distinguished by its very long, linear-lanceolate tepals, acute capsule, ±smooth, subglabrous leaf margin and its general habit. In its general habit it approaches L. crinita.
