| Description: |
Perennials 6–25 (–50) cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short, stout; stolons absent. Basal leaves numerous; cauline leaves 1–2, c. 1.5–3.5 mm wide; margins papillose-serrulate, ciliate; apex obtuse, slightly swollen. Lower bract leaf-like, erect to suberect, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence congested, an angular-conical head 0.5–3 cm long, c. 5–16 mm wide, of subsessile spike-like clusters. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, pale brownish at base. Tepals subequal, (2.0–) 2.5–3.0 mm long; outer tepals acuminate; inner tepals acute or mucronate, pale brown to dark brown; margins distinct, broad, cream. Stamens 6, 0.75–1.0 mm long. Capsule ±equalling perianth, castaneous, with top densely papillose. Seeds broadly ellipsoid, c. 1.1 mm long, 0.8 mm wide; appendage c. 0.2–0.3 mm long. |

An imperfectly known species characterized by congested inflorescence, papillose capsules and seeds 0.8 mm wide. Both L. poimena and L. modesta occur in damp subalpine habitats but L. poimena is only shortly rhizomatous and has stiffer leaves than long-rhizomatous
L. modesta. The inflorescence in L. poimena is conical and never reduced to a short cylindrical spike as is common in Tasmanian forms of L. modesta., L. poimena resembles L. australasica in having thickened rounded leaf margins, but the leaf blades in L. poimena are slightly incurved, often reddish, and narrower than the flat green leaves of L. australasica, and the flowers in L. poimena are not as close-set as those of
L. australasica. |
