Description: Perennials c. 15–35 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome short, shoot base usually bulbous; stolons absent. Basal leaves flat, 7–14 cm long, c. 3–4 (–6) mm wide; cauline leaves 2–3 (–4), 2.5–10 cm long; margins usually densely ciliate, sparsely papillose; apex obtuse. Lower bract leaf-like, c. 3.0–6.5 cm long, often equalling or overtopping inflorescence. Inflorescence composed of 1–3 subsessile and (1) 3–25 pedunculate clusters; clusters ±globose to subglobose, c 10–22-flowered, c. 5–6 mm in diam.; secondary branches frequent, usually distal; secondary peduncles often abbreviated (and then some pedunculate clusters compound, to 10 mm in diam.); peduncles straight, erect to reclinate, c. 1–6 cm long, smooth, rarely slightly papillose distally. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, to c. 1.5 mm long, ciliate-fimbriate. Tepals ±equal, rarely with outer ones longer, ovate-lanceolate; outer tepals acuminate; inner tepals acute, c. 1.8–2.5 mm long, usually pale castaneous-brown to pale brown; margins broad, membranous to creamy-whitish. Stamens 6; anthers 0.3–0.7 mm long; filaments 0.5–0.6 mm long; style 0.2–0.4 mm long; stigmas 0.8–1.0 mm long. Capsule broadly ovoid, subobtuse, castaneous-ferrugineous, smooth, rarely slightly papillose, subequalling to slightly exceeding perianth; capsule segments 1.8–2.1 × 1.3–1.4 mm. Seeds ±ovoid, 0.8–0.9 mm long, c. 0.7 mm wide; appendage 0.3–0.4 (–0.5) mm long. 2n=12, [12AL], fide H.Nordenskiöld, Bot. Not. 122: 72–73 (1969). Fig. 28.

Notes: Plants of L. densiflora in which the inflorescence is condensed to a single head are sometimes difficult to distinguish from those of L. ovata. Usually the capsules in L. densiflora are light reddish brown and the caruncle is one third the length of the seed or longer, whereas the capsules of L. ovata are much darker red-brown to purple-brown and the caruncle is one quarter the length of the seed., Syntypes of L. campestris var. bulbosa Buchenau include both L. meridionalis and L. densiflora, at least, and the description combines characters of the two taxa.
