Description: Perennials 12–40 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves 5–11 (–15) cm long, 2.5–3.5 (–6.0) mm wide, soft; cauline leaves 2–3, c. 3.5–7 cm long; margins sparsely to moderately ciliate, usually papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract herbaceous, c. 1.5–6.0 cm long, shorter to longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence variable, either of subsessile clusters only or of 1–3 subsessile and 2–5 (–10) pedunculate clusters; clusters hemispherical to subglobose, c. 5–12-flowered, 5–7 mm in diam.; peduncles straight, ±erecto-patent, distally papillose, rarely ±smooth, 0.5–1.5 (–3.0) cm long, often abbreviated. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, c. 1.5 mm long, sparsely ciliate. Tepals subequal (inner ones often ±shorter), ±lanceolate, acuminate, (2.0–) 2.5–3.0 (–3.5) mm long, dark brown to pale castaneous-brown; margins distinct, broad, whitish-scarious. Stamens 6; anthers 0.3–1.5 mm long; filaments 0.4–0.9 mm long; style 0.5 (–8) mm long; stigmas c. 1.2–1.5 mm long. Capsule oblong-ovoid, subobtuse, pale brown, sometimes reddish, usually papillose near top, subequalling perianth; capsule segments 2.2–2.5 × 1.3–1.5 mm long. Seeds ovoid-ellipsoid, 1.1–1.2 mm long, 0.7–0.9 mm wide; appendage 0.5–0.6 mm long. 2n=12, [12AL], fide H.Nordenskiöld, Bot. Not. 122: 72–73 (1969). Fig. 28.
Geography: Endemic in Australia where it is common in the southeast, and Tasmania. Introduced in New Zealand. Moist grassy slopes, Eucalyptus woodlands, road banks, and forest fringe communities. Notes: A very variable species with two extremes linked by numerous intermediates. There are plants with short anthers with fewer, larger flower heads, and plants with numerous heads and long anthers. The seeds are also more variable than in related species. The nature of this variation requires further study., In several works of F.G.P.Buchenau, a Luzula of the section Luzula collected by Atkinson was reported to occur in Fiji. The record is based on a plant collected on Hunter Islands, N Tasmania and correctly identified as L. campestris var. flaccida (= L. flaccida). No Luzula is known to occur in Fiji.
