| Description: |
Perennials, (1–) 3–4 (–10) cm tall; rhizome thin, branched, ascending; stolons present, ascending, c. 1–2 cm long. Leaves only basal, 2–3 cm long, ±flat to involute, very narrow,
c. 0.3–0.6 mm wide; margins ±smooth, glabrous, with indumentum confined to sheath mouth; apex obtuse. Lower bract subherbaceous to usually scarious, scarcely equalling inflorescence, c. 4–5 mm long. Inflorescence of 1 (–2) sessile compact 4–7 (–10)-flowered cluster, ±hemispherical, c. 4–6 mm in diam.. Bracteoles scarious, 0.5–0.8 mm long, dentate near apex. Tepals equal, glabrous, broadly lanceolate, acuminate, usually 1.5–1.9 mm long, with middle part blackish brown to dark brown; margins broad, whitish membranous. Stamens 3; anthers 0.3–0.4 mm long; filaments 0.3–0.4 mm long; style c. 0.2 mm long; stigmas c. 0.5 mm long; capsule deep castaneous-brown, shining, subacute, with capsule segments 1.6–1.8 × c. 1.0–1.1 mm. Seeds ±castaneous-brown, 0.8–0.9 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide; apex distinct; appendage whitish, c. 0.1 mm long, ±fibrillate. 2n=12, fide H.Nordenskiöld, New Zealand J. Bot. 4: 188 (1966). |

Known from scattered locations in the North and South Islands of New Zealand, more common in the mountains of Central Otago. Peaty, mossy depressions, along streams, damp places, 750–1500 m.
