Description: Perennials, c. 20–30 (–40) cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short; stolons ±absent. Basal leaves c. 7–14 cm long, 3.0–4.5 mm wide. Cauline leaves 1–3, (3.5–) 5–9 (–11) cm long, to c. 4.5 mm wide; margins ciliate, papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract 1.5–7.0 cm long, usually shorter, rarely longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence composed of 1–2 subsessile and (0–) 1–3 (–6) pedunculate, broadly ovoid to ±cylindric, (3–) 5–9 (–13)-flowered clusters 0.6–1.3 mm long, 0.7–1.0 mm wide; proximal flowers in a cluster, rarely remote; proximal peduncles sometimes remote. Peduncles straight to flexuose, c. 2.5–8.5 cm long, smooth or slightly papillose just below cluster. Bracteoles ovate, scarious to ±purplish, c. 2.0 mm long, ciliate. Tepals ±equal, glabrous, (3.1–) 3.4–4.0 (–5.0) mm long, lanceolate, acuminate to acute, blackish castaneous-brown or castaneous-brown; margins scarious, distinct, broad. Stamens 6; anthers (1.1–) 1.5–2.0 mm long, slightly to many times longer than 0.4–0.6 mm long filaments; style 0.6–1.2 mm long; stigmas 2.0–3.5 mm long. Capsule obovoid, pale brown, subobtuse, shorter than perianth; capsule segments c. 2.6–2.9 × 1.8–2.0 mm. Seeds ovoid-subglobular, 1.2–1.3 mm long, 0.9–1.1 mm wide; appendage 0.2–0.3 (rarely 0.5) mm long, fibrillate; apex umbonulate. 2n=12, fide H.Nordenskiöld, Hereditas 37: 336–337 (1951).

Notes: A very variable species. It is possible that some tetraploid plants from California belong to L. subsessilis, too. The species comprises two morphological extremes linked by a majority of intermediates: large-flowered plants with clusters broadly ovoid, dense, and plants with medium-sized flowers in looser clusters. The two forms sometimes coexist at a locality. The type of L. subsessilis is closer to the large-flowered extreme. Some plants are difficult to distinguish from L. comosa var. laxa; the latter always has narrower seeds.
