Perennials c. 7–14 cm tall, stout, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves numerous, 3–5 (–8) cm long, 3–4 mm wide Cauline leaves 1–2, 3–4 cm long, to 3–4 mm wide; margins sparsely ciliate, densely papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bracts
1–3, ±stiff, reddish, leaf-like, 1.0–1.8 (–3.0) cm long, erecto-patent, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence a densely congested head of c. 1–4 (–6) sessile indistinct clusters, many-flowered, usually (0.5–) 0.8–1.2 cm in diam. Bracteoles broadly ovate, whitish-scarious,
c. 1.5 mm long. Tepals ±equal, glabrous, lanceolate, acuminate, c. 2.4–2.9 mm long, dark castaneous-brown to blackish-brown; margins distinct, broad, pale brownish-membranous. Stamens 6; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long; filaments 0.5–0.6 mm long; style 0.2–0.3 mm long; stigmas 0.7–1.0 mm long. Capsule ±ovoid, ±obtuse, shorter than perianth, dark castaneous-brown; capsule segments 1.8–2.0 × c. 1.1 mm; mucro c. 0.1 mm long. Similar to L. sudetica and L. groenlandica but differs in having longer tepals, usually shorter seeds and usually wider leaves. The diploid (agmatoploid) chromosome numbers indicate the distinctiveness of the species. |
