Description: Plants (3–) 8–15 (–30) cm tall; stem stout, c. 1.5 mm in diam. Basal leaves sparsely hairy, usually (2–) 8–15 (–25) cm long, (2–) 3–6 (–7) mm wide; cauline leaves usually 2, often long and exceeding stem. Lower bracts usually 2, to 5–6 cm long, 2–3 (–4) mm wide, conspicuously exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence congested, many-flowered, of a single head of c. 2–7 echinate globular clusters, sometimes with 1–2 clusters on short peduncles. Tepals narrowly lanceolate, gradually tapering, long-acuminate, usually (2.3–) 2.6–4.0 mm long; midrib narrow, distinct, dark brown to castaneous; margins broad, usually silvery scarious. Anthers (0.4–) 0.5–0.8 (–1.0) mm long; filaments (0.4–) 0.6–1.0 mm long [anther:filament ratio 0.9–1.2 (–2.3)]; style 0.5–0.9 mm long; stigma 1.8–2.6 mm long. Capsule obovoid, subobtuse to subacuminate, straw-brown to pale brown (apex often castaneous); capsule segments (1.8–) 2.0–2.3 (–2.6) Χ 1.1–1.4 mm. Seeds broadly ovoid, 0.9–1.3 mm long, 0.7–0.9 mm wide; appendage c. 0.2 mm long, fibrillate. 2n=12 [AL], fide H.Nordenskiφld, New Zealand J. Bot. 4: 187 (1966).
