Description: Plants robust, (5–) 12–30 (–70) cm tall. Basal leaves rigid, usually to 15 cm long, (1–) 3–6 (–11) mm wide; cauline leaves usually 2, to c. 20 cm long. Lower bracts 2–9, rigid, with longer ones usually 3–12 cm long, conspicuously exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence of 2–5, usually congested, many-flowered clusters, each c. 10 mm in diam.; head usually 1.5–2.0 cm in diam.; peduncles straight, usually 1–2 cm long; secondary branches absent. Tepals narrowly lanceolate, long-acuminate, usually (2.0–) 2.4–3.4 (–3.9) mm long; middle part castaneous-brown, broad; margins distinct, ±scarious to membranous. Anthers 0.5–0.9 (–1.0) mm long; filaments 0.5–0.9 mm long [anther:filament ratio 0.6–1.2 (–1.5)]; style 0.2–0.7 mm long; stigmas c. 1.5–2.8 mm long. Capsule oblong-obovoid, subacute, pale brown, shorter than perianth; capsule segments c. (1.5–) 1.7–2.8 Χ (0.9–) 1.2–1.5 (–1.7) mm. Seeds ellipsoid, 0.9–1.2 mm long, 0.5–0.7 (–0.9) mm wide; appendage distinct, c. 0.2 mm long, ±fibrillate. 2n=12 [AL], fide J. B. Hair, New Zealand J. Bot. 5: 18 (1967).
